Road & rail development

The Port of Melbourne is part of the total freight transport logistics system and it relies on its links to road and rail transport.

Because of this, the future strategic development of transport links is a high priority for Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC), which is working closely with the Victorian Government to develop a plan for an integrated freight transport system for the state.

PoMC is also represented on industry organisations - Victorian Seafreight Industry Council, the Victorian Road Freight Advisory Council and the Victorian Rail Freight Advisory Council.

To improve the efficiency of freight movement and reduce the impact of trucks on roads, the state government has set a goal of 30 per cent of freight to be moved by rail for the state's ports, by 2010. Currently, around 20 per cent of all freight moved in and out of the Port of Melbourne is carried by rail.

PoMC is committed to this goal and is working closely with customers and stakeholders on a number of projects which will help to achieve the government's 30 per cent target.

Specifically, rail was reintroduced to Swanson Dock West in February 2003. Other projects include improvements to existing rail facilities at Swanson Dock East and the potential reinstatement of rail to Webb Dock, south of the Yarra River.

Feasibility and economic viability studies are under underway on the Webb Dock project and PoMC is working closely with the government and stakeholders to determine if and when the project will go ahead.
