Navigation aids

With safe access for large vessels entering Port Phillip Bay restricted to certain channels the reliable operation of the navigation aids, which mark these channels, is critical to the safety of all commercial shipping.

The Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) is responsible for more than 150 navigation aids, lighthouses, beacons and buoys marking the commercial shipping channels and approaches to the port.

The PoMC ensures the safe and efficient movement of vessels by strategic planning for future needs, building new structures when required and supervising the upgrading and regular maintenance of existing structures by contractors.

A remote telemetry system ensures the reliability of all major lights in port waters. Any failures are detected instantly and response teams can be dispatched to carry out repairs immediately.
